Logically, watching weather conditions in your area is very basic day to day thing aside from receiving them technologically on television, on your cellphone, or the radio or thru e-mail or pager. Being able to know the upcoming weather helps you in a lot of ways from taking care of Your Garden or livestock to what to wear before venturing out of your home. The most basic weather device is the cup anemometer. It consists of three or four small hollow cups or hemispheres fixed in a particular manner so they catch the wind and are set on a vertical rod. The wind velocity is measured by the number of revolutions of the cups which is transmitted to an electrical device. This basic weather instrument can be easily made by almost anybody as long as you have the materials needed. The rotating cups should be of the same size to ensure even rotations resulting to more accurate data. The vertical rod used for the rotating cups should be straight and strong enough to hold the weight of the rotating cups so it would be sturdier. The most common problem is the contact point between the rotating cup part and the vertical rod. A bicycle bearing could be used instead of plain metal ring. Therefore, it minimizes friction between contact points and ensuring smooth rotations and a much more accurate data.
Since our technology is much more advance today, devices or advance weather instruments are now being made and promoted. Making a miniature weather station in Your Own home. But advanced as they are so are their technical problems. Home weather stations now can record temperature, humidity, air pressure, wind strength and direction, and rainfall in one small device. A total whopper for gadget gizmos. But wires can be a hassle crisscrossing across your ceilings and walls down to your electrical equipment not to mention the hassle of letting the wires across to where you want the equipment placed. Sometimes it limits you to only how long the wires the equipment gives. So choosing a wireless home weather station would take all that hassle away. A next technical problem is the radio range. It affects your data and sometimes it has government restrictions thus making your data slow and unreliable. Other times finding the right place and position of the sensor is time consuming and very stressful because you have to consider trees and other buildings even the room that you put the receiver in should be considered. Could be the wall be too thick or is there one wall too many. Having a radio frequency range of at least 300 ft or 91m or more would solve this problem. Another sun being directly in contact with your temperature sensors affecting temperature readings. of course shielding the sensors from direct sunlight would change all that. The most basic problem is the installation of the weather device. You might end up hiring a technician to do the job not wanting to destroy the equipment instead which obviously will cost you unnecessarily. So choose one that is easy to install.
Has anyone actually won the readers digest prize draw, ever?
I’ve been inundated with them since I took out a Readers digest subscription, they keep sending me books I don’t want and told me in the last letter they are sending a weather station! I don’t have a garden why would I want a weather station?
Is it just junk mail destined for the bin or should I fill it in and risk even more mailings from them?
Do I even have a chance of winning today’s letter says I am "favourably qualified for offer. Could be declared winner upon return on this entry notice. Prize £10,000
I doubt very much if anyone has ever won anything in the readers digest prize draw.
I used to love the magazine but then they ruined it with adds, pressuring me to buy stuff I didnt want and those stupid prize draws with their fake "your a winner" rubbish all over it.
My parents were avid subscribers for as long as I can remember for the condensed books but stopped getting them for the same reasons.

No matter how much people try to encourage the wildlife to visit and live in their gardens. There will always be occasions and/or parts of the garden where we do not Welcome them. This being mainly when we are planting young seedlings or a crop of edible plants is getting close to harvest. So we have to strike a balance between encouraging the wildlife as well as being able to discourage them at other times or from certain particular places.
There are four ways of protecting your plants or crop from the ravages of birds and animals; these methods include fences, scarers, covers and sprays. Here we will deal with suggestions for the last three of these ideas.
Most of these ideas though will only provide a temporary solution, because most times the birds or wildlife, while scared off at first will eventually stop being frightened and will return and ignore or bypass that method in future. So it is an idea to only use each idea for a short time, and then later switch to a different system of control.
Scarers
Scarers usually rely on something to surprise the wildlife's vision or hearing, to frighten them into leaving.
Bell Scarers
If you have some small cheap bells lying around or you can pick some up cheap, then string them along a length of twine over your plants.
Bottle Top Scarers
String a series of metal and or plastic bottle tops between stakes driven into the ground at the outside of the area to be protected. Make sure that they can move easily in the slightest breeze or at the gentlest touch. It also helps if some of them can rattle together to add a bit of noise.
Tie one off every so often so that it cannot move, this will stop them all migrating to the lowest point of the length of string.
Drink Bottle Rattle Scarer
Partially fill some drink bottles with a fairly light product like rice or dried peas, put enough in to make it into a rattle. Then tie them along some twine tied over your young plants. If animals tap them or the breeze is blowing they will make a noise, to frighten the small critters away.
Drink Can/Bottle Scarers
Tie some cans or bottle along some twine so that they can bump together to make a noise if tapped or moved by a breeze, to frighten the small animals or birds.
Whirligig Scarers
If you have one of those little whirligigs that have a blade that goes around in the breeze, why not set it up near your plants it will scare the birds away as long as the wind is blowing.
Hawk Scarers
Unless you are fairly good at both art and woodcraft and can make one yourself, you will probably have to go out purchase one of the commercially made Hawk scarers and set it up following the directions in the pack, to frighten away the birds.
Kites
Here you can either go out and purchase a small cheap kids kite or look at making Your Own kites.
To cover your kite, you can use anything from material through to old foil wrapping paper, kitchen foil or even plastic shopping bags.
Even kites made to be only a few inches across, can be an effective scarer, if you hang them to blow in the breeze.
Ribbon Scarers
Rip or cut some scraps of brightly coloured or reflective material into small strips. Tie them to twine over the plants to be protected, leave enough dangling to flap around in the breeze, to scare the birds.
Scarecrow
Have a go at making a Scarecrow, it may or not be effective at scaring the birds, but it almost be guaranteed to become a piece of landscaping art and a talking point around the neighbourhood.
Silver Foil Scarers
Aluminium foil or used Foil wrapping paper or bags (eg Chip bags), which is cut into strips to hang on twine through the area will scare the daylights out of any creature which moves it, or sees it moving in the breeze.
Or try wrapping polystyrene or ping-pong balls in the foil, and hang these through the area.
Water Hose/Sprinkler Scarer
Position a Garden Hose either up into a strong branch of a fruiting tree. Or tie it to a Garden Stake in the middle of your young plants. Leave a few feet loose above the top point at which you tie it off. When you notice birds descending on your plants. Turn the hose on as hard as you can. This will result in the end of the hose flapping around rather wildly gushing out a strong stream of water. This is usually enough to frighten anyone let alone the local wildlife.
Repeat this a few times and the birds or wildlife will soon not bother coming back.
Why not try and hang your old wind chimes in the area that you want protected.
Wine Cask Bladder Scarer
Take the nozzle out and use like a box kite. Or blow them up like balloons.
Tinsel Scarers
Use some of your old tinsel, or buy some up cheap in the post Christmas sales.
Allow plenty of loose material to permit the tinsel to move around in the breezes.
Sails/Pennants
Material, foil or plastic set up to flap in the breeze like either a sail or pennant, can be an effective scarer.
Windsock Scarer
Try your hand at making your own miniature version of an Airport's Windsock to frighten the birds and animals
Clothesline/Airer Scarer
If you have the type of family that has clothes drying on a clothes line most days, then place your young plants in pots around the base of the clothes line or set up a movable clothes Airer near your delicate plants filling the lines with clothes and linen which will flap around a bit will also be an effective bird and small animal scarer.
Plastic Snakes
If you have an old plastic snake at the bottom of the old toy box, why not try putting it in amongst your plants. While I have never tried this method myself, I have heard of others who swear by this scarer. Move it around every so often.
Toy Animal Scarers
What about the idea of strategically placing a realistic looking toy dog or cat near your young plants. The theory being that the birds or small animals will already have had experience with real cats and dogs so will avoid any area with them.
(This is theoretical suggestion, which I haven't seen tried but is based on the supposed success of the plastic snakes). So if anyone has the opportunity to try this one, let me know the results, please.
Protective Covers
Whereas putting a cover over or around the plants physically stops the animals from reaching the plants.
Glass/ Hard Plastic Covers
If you have a pane of glass or an old window that is not being used put it over your young plants, lift it above the plants using whatever is available to you, eg bricks etc.
Milk/Yoghurt Container Covers
Cut the top and bottom out of cardboard or plastic containers and slip these over young plants to stop birds and other animals from digging them out till they are established. It helps to bury the bottom of the container slightly.
This idea works just as well with any round or square material that will go round your young plants, from drink bottles to small sections of plastic plumbers pipe. But always cut them down one side to make removal easier once the plants have grown a bit.
Plastic/Shade cloth/Bird netting Covers
Make a framework of stakes around the plants that you want to protect, and place over this a shade cloth/plastic or bird netting cover. Shade cloth or plastic can be purchased by the foot/metre from nurseries or hardware stores. Or you can even just throw the shade cloth or bird netting directly over the plants/shrubs or small trees, if the plant is strong enough to support the weight of the material.
Stick and String Covers
Whether you are trying to protect a pot of seedlings or a bigger area out in the garden. Make up a framework of sticks or Garden Stakes around the seedlings, and then tie them loosely together by weaving some string, cotton, wool or twine between the sticks/stakes.
Wire Mesh Frame Covers
Wire Netting Covers
Support some of that light flexible fencing wire, mosquito mesh or even plastic mesh over your seedlings of fruiting plants, and support it with garden stakes to keep the birds away from your plants.
Hard Wire Frame Covers
Try supporting some hard wire mesh over your young plants to protect them from the ravages of birds or animals. You can use things like light concreting mesh or fencing panels, or whatever else you can access around the place.
Support them up off the ground with garden stakes, bricks or even soft drink bottles filled with water.
Sprays
The reason for applying a spray is to make the animals think that the targeted plant or fruit is not as tasty as they at first believed it should be. But it usually takes a bit of experimentation to find what will work with particular pests. As each have their own likes and dislikes even within the one species.
But try mixing hot or unpleasant but safe ingredients together to make a spray diluted with water to spray over your seedlings or fruiting plants. Try to avoid spraying fruit that you will eat, or rinse such produce well before consuming.
Some ingredients you might try include,
Tabasco sauce
Garlic
Onions
Chillies
Etc.
The above list of ideas should be enough to provide you with at least a few alternatives that you can try to combat those ravenous critters that are bombarding your young charges.

“[Life] Amazing! Isn’t it?...”
- Medical Turf Wars -
“So, am I gon’na live?”
“Chief, I don’t know how you guys do it. I took a double-take on your birthday ‘cause your “biological” age and your “chronological” age just don’t match! What kind of veggies or vitamins are you taking? I haven’t seen a 28” waist since High School! I still lift (weights) regularly and am an amateur bodybuilder. What’s your bodyfat percentage?” He said.
Trying to get on his good side, I said, “I don’t know. Four months ago, the Aviation Medical Technician doing the prelims for one of my physical exams said it was ‘too low to be healthy’, I think. Whatever that means?”
He was the DMO (Diving Medical Officer), a lieutenant (Officer Grade 3 in the Navy), and in his mid-thirties (my age at the time). He was already beginning to bald, and slightly paunchy. He still had the big arms and barrel chest of a Navy Diver, but probably hadn’t seen a six-pack on his body for years.
“So, what’s your secret? My wife would go totally ga-ga if I could get my college body back.”
I didn’t want to tell him that the simple answer was to get rid of his wife. Single men tended to be more “hungry” and had less extraneous obligations.
And it took a very understanding spouse to put up with the lifestyle of “an athlete in uniform.” The hours of training were just too long for even the most loving wife.
I knew. I was on my second wife and the marriage’s prognosis looked very bleak.
Grinning at the doctor I said, “Amazing, isn’t it? I attribute my girlish figure to celibacy and pure thoughts.”
(In reality, I PT’d [physically trained] for at least 3 hours a day, ate like a pig all day, then drank beer and chased women at night.)
The rest of the time I wasted on frivolous things (like work).
We both laughed.
Then I asked, “Sir, when can I leave?”
“If it was up to me, I’d let you go now. But as you know, you need to be cleared by the ‘other guys’ too,” the DMO said.
“I can’t be medically disqualified right now. I got some important orders,” I desperately whined.
The truth was that I was to do some “exchange student” exercises with a few of my counterparts from foreign military units (e.g., Republic of Korea, British, Australian, and Thailand teams) in the next few weeks.
“Cobra Gold” was the official name of the annual joint military exercises held on and around the Pattaya Beach area of Thailand.
I looked forward to this yearly “Work Hard, Play Hard” event.
I especially loved the beautiful women. They’re always amazed that: 1) I am American, not Thai (I’m a mix of everything Asian) and 2) in spite of being “gaa” (Thai: old), like a Tantric Sex Master, I can go on for hours in the bedroom.
Similar to Jack LaLane on his birthday (who?), I added more “degrees of difficulty” (meaning, participants) to my personal exploits every year.
“Chill out. I’m sure you’ll be discharged in time to go to Cobra Gold. Jeez! I love that place! Anyway, I’ve arranged for my most responsible Corpsman to keep you company. Just don’t corrupt her too much” he said, smiling like the devil.
These “Medical Turf Wars” were a hassle for people like me.
Instead of periodic physical examinations by one doctor, I had to be cleared by several different doctors (e.g., Med/Specwar guy, Diving Doc, Flight Surgeon, PTSD Psychiatrist, etc.).
This meant having at least three, instead of one, rectal exam every year!
I never got used to that.
One year, after getting past the point of being pissed off, I invited all the nurses to witness my rectal exams.
Since all Military Hospitals double as learning institutions, there was never a shortage of an audience (mostly interns, new Corpsman, and fresh Nursing school graduates).
Laying prone on the examination table and my bare ass in the air, I proclaimed to the giggling group of students, “Have your way with me. My ass is your ass!”
The responses (and phone numbers afterwards) were well worth it.
But when I saw who was going to be my companion during her Duty Day, I didn’t mind that I’d be here (on a Submarine Tender Medical Ward) overnight.
“Thanks Doc!” I shouted as the DMO bade his farewell.
- Those Medical Slackers -
Looking down at the cute Filipina Corpsman at the foot of my bed, I asked, “Are you sure you want to hear this?”
“Yes, of course. I’ve read about it, but I’ve never met anyone who has actually experienced it,” she said, momentarily breaking her gaze away from my powerful erection to smile a little, naughty smile.
Did she just lick her lips?
Then, silently, she stood up, walked to the “wrong” side of the patient bed, reached across my body, and checked the I.V. bag and drip chamber hanging on a metal hook on the other side of the bed.
“Accidentally” smothering me with her chest, she whispered, “Oops. Sorry.”
“No problem, no problem at all, HN (Hospitalman, E-3 paygrade) Marisol.”
During my short stay in her Sickbay/Ward, we had already established a close, informal rapport. I teased her by addressing her by the appropriate military title “HN,” but then finished it with the totally inappropriate, overly friendly use of her first name (Marisol) instead of her last name.
I could usually tell when to cross the line or not.
Medical personnel (officer and enlisted alike) were notorious for employing lax military standards and sloppy decorum.
Line Officers called them “Slackers, referring to their apparent lack of military bearing. I couldn’t blame them (the medical personnel). In fact, initially, when I first joined the service, I was just like them.
You see, most military medical personnel were just biding their time, simply repaying the military back for their medical training. After one hitch (tour of duty), they usually left active duty to pursue a more lucrative, civilian medical career. This applied to the majority of doctors, nurses, and Corpsmen within all branches of the U.S. Military Services (Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps).
The U.S. Marine Corps had no indigenous medical personnel. That was why I, a Navy Independent Duty Corpsman, was technically a sailor, but, for all practical purposes, was a Marine at heart. Except for my mandatory stints at Navy Hospitals and “Tin Cans” (small ships), I spent the bulk of my career deployed with Marines (specifically, the Diver/Jumper types).
I spent equal time honing my technical skills AND my Marine (grunt) skills. Consequently, I had little time to gather dust. If I wasn’t doing the required CME (Continuous Medical Education - emergency medical training), I was busy diving, jumping, or shooting.
Since I love those activities, the years zoomed by. Before I knew it, over two decades had past and it was time to retire. Mainstreaming into regular, civilian life was hard for me. (But that’s another story).
Back to this story.
Almost sadistically, I prayed for missions because they had an immediate and direct focus (no trivial, unrealistic training and classes by some civilian geek or hospital administrator with no clue about real life operations).
Ninety-percent of any mission was spent on prep time (warning orders, mission briefs, physical examinations, immunizations, equipment checks, etc), travel time (ship, submarine, or airplane); and, once the mission was completely executed, aborted while in progress, or cancelled before going operational, there was the required extensive de-brief time and after action reports.
- My Angel of Mercy Revisited -
Turning my attention back to the sexy Corpsman, I said, “Hell, I’m just glad to have company!”
I had a big sh*t-eating grin on my face; mainly because I was not talking directly to her face, but to the uniform-bursting breasts that were currently dancing in front of my nose.
She blushed again.
With a half-smile, she resumed her position at the end of my bed –fixing her eyes on my blatant hard-on and continued her “Watch.”
“Imagine That…”
Marisol propped her elbows at the foot of my bed and held her face in her hands. The posture instantly conjured up “peek-a-boo, hide-n-sneek” breast fantasies in my head (both of them)!
In any other situation I would have initiated “full-body, hand-to-butt/bust CQB (close quarters combat),” but held back to examine my angel of mercy, visually savoring her youthful beauty and tight, yet buxom, body.
After looking at her full lips and angel face, I wondered if she liked big popsickles?
Then I continued my story about the first time I suffered from “Priapism,” an uncontrolled erection that often becomes a medical emergency…
…Okay, there I was, wildly falling through the air. My main parachute had malfunctioned and all my attempts to correct it proved futile. I was losing altitude by the second and now it was time to use the last resort: the reserve parachute.
The reserve chute was considered the last resort for a couple of reasons. First, it was much smaller than the main chute; and secondly, the reserve chute for this particular Army Infantry configuration was worn on the stomach. It was called “the belly pack,” because the rest of the soldier’s gear was worn below the main parachute pack on the soldier’s back. Located at the small of the back and extending down past the buttocks, this additional gear worn under the main chute was called the “butt pack.”
In this way, supposedly, the soldier was somewhat balanced in the weight distribution of his gear. Nevertheless, especially with a deployed (opened) butt pack (and its accompanied, lanyard connected, extracted gear), the normal, preferred vertical posture was almost impossible to maintain.
I had to jettison the main chute via its harness clips (specialized buckles with a two-step process for separating the shoulder harness straps from the main parachute risers).
The real trick was timing. Ideally, both buckles are to be opened simultaneously.
Bad news for me.
I couldn’t open both buckles together because I was wildly oscillating through the air. The parachute canopy above me looked like a bag of worms, while I felt like the main attraction at a public hanging, dangling by one riser.
This meant that I could only reach one buckle. The other riser was far above the first, tangled amongst shroud lines and the beginning of the canopy skirt.
The furthest buckle had to be opened first. If I opened the nearest buckle, I would have had to wrestle with a taught riser and a buckle buried under tight material. (It would be like trying to get to a coin embedded in a fist full of tight shoelace knots.)
Doing a pull-up and climbing past the exposed buckle, I cut away a mass of shroud-lines with my hooked shroud-line cutter, found the buried buckle, and released. Immediately my body assumed an awkward “hanging by one arm” position. The jolt of repositioning was felt all along the left side of my body. Not much pain (probably due to adrenaline). My left hand, arm, and shoulder felt numb and clumsy. I tried to re-stow my hooked shroud-line cutter, but…but, it was gone! I must have lost my grip on it when the opening shock jolted my body.
“Imagine That…”
Oh well, if I survive this, I guess I’ll have to bribe another Survival Equipment person for another cutter. (I wasn’t the best at sanitizing my actions. I lost or forgot gear often - a bad habit that would severely impact my life later on. Yet again, another story for later consumption).
Bribing a lower ranked Marine in the Survival Equipment shop was much easier than filling out the mountain of paperwork required when reporting missing gear for replacement.
Then I released the second (last) buckle, dramatically accelerated downward, and saw the tangled mess of the main parachute assembly, shroud-lines, and canopy material fly away from me like a bird of prey releasing a mouse that was too small to eat.
I put one arm out and rolled to my back (facing the sky) and assumed a “reverse free-fall position,” that is, instead of the normal free-fall position (face toward the Earth and spread eagle), I now looked more like a dead cockroach.
Ironically, through all this, I smiled while I rolled.
I always loved maneuvering during free-fall. It is intoxicating and called “relative work.” It really feels like you’re swimming through the air. It’s like doing gymnastics in a loud, raging river. For example, if you do a stiff-legged, double leg lift, your body is put into a reverse somersault. If you stick one arm or one leg further away from the body, you rotate in that direction. One birthday I did an ungodly amount of jumps and went to sleep that night exhausted, happy, and dreaming of being Superman.
Supine, I pretended to be a badminton birdy.
And within seconds, my free-fall was controlled.
Reaching to my belly pack (reserve parachute), I found the pull ring, and prepared to pull. In one, symmetrical motion I pulled the ring with one hand and abducted my arm (moved the arm away from my body) while simultaneously mimicking the same motion with the other arm.
It looked like I was doing the top half of a ballet dancer’s pirouette. The reason for this was aerodynamic symmetry. If I didn’t copy the motion of the pulling arm, there was a chance that I may rotate onto my stomach again – not a good thing with a “belly pack” reserve setup.
Experiencing “temporal distortion,” I saw the flaps of the reserve shoot open in s-l-o-w m-o-t-i-o-n. A small drogue chute peeked out of the pack and began to extract the rest of the material. It all seemed surrealistic, like I was sliding face down on a giant synthetic “silk” slide in the sky.
(My mind flashed to the briefing before this jump. Almost as a premonition, I asked the PR [Parachute Rigger] what were the procedures for a malfunctioned reserve chute.
With an evil grin, he said, “Do a Michael Jackson.”
“A what?” I asked.
“Beat it! Beat it! Beat it!” he chuckled.
“Imagine That…”)
Then the wall of moving silk disappeared and all of a sudden shroud-lines pulled taught and slapped me in the face.
In spite of being a smaller chute, the combination of my relatively light Asian frame and no additional weight from Infantry Gear made the reserve parachute’s opening shock turn me into the helpless victim of a T.V. Wrestler. I was getting the infamous “back breaker” maneuver.
Great.
Earlier, the first opening shock of the now defunct main chute made me feel like I was being split in half (from the crotch up); and now the God’s were trying to bend me in half backwards - like I was some chemlight stick that needed to be activated!
Oh well, at least my day was getting a little better.
I was now under a full reserve parachute, swaying like an airlifted cargo crate.
- Pondering my PLF -
The next challenge on my checklist was the task of doing a decent PLF (Parachute Landing Fall). The purpose of the PLF was to distribute the impact of landing across the whole body, therefore; theoretically reducing the chances of injury.
But my experiences over the years showed me that even the most perfect PLF’s can result in sprained ankles, broken legs, shattered clavicles (collar bones), fractured hips, dislocated shoulders, etc.
The Landing Procedures and textbook PLF is as follows:
1.Maneuver (steer) into the wind, so the chute falls behind you. This is easily done during training jumps. One only has to orient himself into the opposite direction of the wind as indicated by a windsock (on land) or a boat’s flag (over water). Just think “stab yourself with the windsock or flag” and you’re going into the wind. But during real missions, one had to use other clues (e.g., whitecaps on waves, swaying branches of trees, etc.).
2.Keep your eyes on the horizon – don’t look down. Looking down makes the jumper incorrectly anticipate ground impact because of the illusion of “ground rush.” It also compromises the vertical posture needed to perform a good PLF.
3.Raise hands over your head, grasp, and hold onto the parachute risers throughout the PLF. This minimizes injuries to the shoulders, arms, and hands by preventing the chance of “flail” injuries - if you’ve ever stubbed your toe, replace your toe with an arm and you know what I mean.
4.Point toes downward and slightly bend the knees.
5.Tuck in the head (chin to chest).
6.Upon impact, immediately allow the body to roll laterally to whichever side that momentum, wind, and terrain moves your body.
7.Spread your impact force over the following parts of the body: balls of feet, calf, side of thigh, buttock, side of back, rear shoulder.
When performed correctly, the body should naturally fall and roll; ending up in a sitting position and opposite your parachute.
But instead of vertical, I was laying backward at a 45-degree angle. The reserve chute attached to my stomach and absence of butt pack weight forced me to keep as upright as possible by continually pulling on my risers.
I felt like I was stuck at “half-rep” on a Lat-Pull Down machine in the gym set with a full stack of weight.
Oh well, the horizon was in full view. I’d just have to make do.
- Ouch, that’s got’ta hurt! -
If you saw the way I landed, you’d probably wince with empathy.
Like fans at an American football game who witness a particularly nasty hit (tackle), you’d probably say that familiar American cliché: “Ouch, that’s got’ta hurt!”
Instead of balls of feet, calves, quads, glutes, lats, delts, and roll; my heels hit first.
Then came the vicious ground impact on my coccyx (butt bone).
The next assault was to the back of my head (Thank God, my Protech helmet didn’t shatter).
I tried to stand, but only made it to my knees. Everything was a spinning, blur. I wasn’t sure if my chute was in front of me or behind me.
My question was promptly answered. It was in front of me.
How did I know?
It re-inflated and began dragging me, head first, along the dirt, grass, and rocks of the drop zone!
Whack! One lens of my goggles breaks. Now one-half of my limited vision looked like a muddy spider web. Afraid of plastic chards going into my eye, I shut both eyes and ripped the goggles off my face.
Whack-whack-whack! The side of my helmet kept bouncing off the uneven ground.
(Another gust of wind.)
I tried to lift my head.
Bad idea.
The wind shifted into second gear and the chute began dragging me faster.
Shroud-lines that had wrapped themselves around my helmet and neck forced my head back down into the rock-strewn earth.

If you are thinking of doing a few upgrades to Your Garden, have you ever thought of getting a Solar Powered pump birdbath? In fact, why buy one, when you can make it?
So why would you want to make a solar powered pump birdbath?
The Advantages Are:
Fountains circulate the water, keeping the Bird Bath from going stagnant
The pump does not have to plugged into your power supply
The pump runs on DC power, so no inverter is needed.
It requires little power (about 6 volts) so you only need a few small solar panels.
No batteries are required, since the pump only really needs to operate during the day when the sun is out and the birds are in the garden.
You could learn to make Your Own solar panels, reducing the cost even further.
The birdbath can be placed anywhere in your garden, without the need for unsightly wires.
And what does it take to make a solar powered pump birdbath?
The easiest way is to simply buy a birdbath with a pump and fountain already fitted. Then all you need to do is wire up some small solar panels.
The alternative is to, and more DIY approach is to buy a birdbath that is ready for a Fountain Pump to be installed (it has the right holes, and a place for the pump to be installed), and then add the various pump and power components.
If you go the DIY route, then you will need to get:
The Birdbath:
Here you have a choice of cascading fountains, copper fountains, terracotta birdbaths, resin fountains, or the conventional ceramic birdbath. Just make sure a pump system can be installed on the birdbath.
The Fountain Attachment:
This is optional, but it make the water spirt out the top, instead of just trickling out. It can be found at you rlocal nursery or hardware store.
Small DC Pump:
Depending your birdbath size, the volume of water to be pumped and how high you want to pump it, will help you decide on the voltage and size pump needed. For your average, medium-sized birdbath, a small 6 volt DC pump will suffice.
Thin, Flexible PVC Pipe:
This what the water will flow through. It is best to ask your nursery about the various irrigation options. Otherwise, get ideas from finished pump powered fountains. As a rule of thumb, the PVC piping needs to be narrow to maintain enough water pressure.
Silicon Sealant:
This is used to seal all joins where the water could escape from, and also to insulate any bare wire from getting wet where it has been joined.
Solar Panels:
This is what sets this off-grid system apart from conventionally powered birdbath fountains. The pump will help determine how many solar panels you need. For a 6 volt DC pump, you will need at least a 6 volt Solar Panel, but rater double up on the solar panels for times when the sun is weak.
->To get the solar panels, you have 2 choices:
1 : Buy a small expensive solar kit from Wallmart or Target or any other local supplier.
2 : The cheaper, DIY route and make the panel yourself. Luckily this is actually rather simple for anyone to learn to do. So if you want to learn to make your own, then carry on reading to the end...
To get the maximum sunlight, the solar panels need to be fixed in simple frame, and be south-facing (if you are in the northern hemisphere).
How easy is it to put it all together?
Once you have all the components and tools at your disposal, putting the system together shouldn't take you more than 2 hours. And within an afternoon you could have a fully functional solar powered pump birdbath.
A nice added extra is to hook up some batteries to the system. That way you can store any excess power, and the pump could run all day and night. If you do want the fountain to operate for 24 hours, then you will need the following:
Deep cycle battery:
Since the system is small, a 12 volt battery should be enough. This will be wired up between the charge controller and the pump.
Solar charge controller:
This is not essential, but it prevents your battery from over-charging. So it can really extend the life of the battery. It will be wired up between the solar panels and the battery.
The nice thing about about building a solar powered pump birdbath yourself is that it is not only cheaper, but once you know how, you can make as many as you want. It could also make a great gift for an energy conscious friend or family member.

I have been fascinated since my youth by the dichotomy that is the subjective and objective worlds. Part of the fascination stems from the knowledge that the objective world will continue although my subjective world will end with my demise. My subjective world is my knowledge and experience of what is happening in our civilization. It goes beyond breathing, eating, drinking, thinking and doing. It encompasses driving cars and flying in airliners. It includes my relationship with family, friends and work mates. It includes gazing in awe at such wonders of the modern world as the Eiffel Tower. However, money flow plays a big part even though it is a creation by people and has no place in the objective world of what happens. It just affects the decisions made by people. The fanciful growth of monetary wealth is encouraging the ignoring of the power of the objective world.
My objective world is based on my understanding of what has happened over time. I know a little about how the universe has evolved over billions of years since the big bang. I know a little more about how life has evolved here on earth. I know a little about how the geological face has been affected by the natural forces of plate tectonics, in earthquakes and in volcanic eruptions. I know Australia was once joined to the continent further north.
However, it is quite clear that overall these natural forces have produced a degree of self-organization and self-regulation of the evolutionary process. That is why humans grow to a roughly predictable size, as do whales and microbes. It is why rivers contribute to biodiversity as well as geodiversity. Watching a tree swaying in a wind serves as a reminder of how natural structures cope with stresses and strains. Structural engineers have learned much from this aspect of the objective world. Birds fly by using natural forces naturally. Airliners fly because our aerodynamicists have learned how to shape airfoils to harness natural forces to provide lift.
Sustainable eco systems have slowly evolved under the impetus of these controlling factors. Species have come and gone. I know a little about how civilizations have developed and, in some cases declined. Easter Island is one oft-quoted example but the eclipse of the Sumerian and Mayan civilizations are more illustrative of what is happening to our industrialized civilization, which I call Tityas in view of its analogy to the Greek mythological rampaging son of Gaia. I know that if I wish to know more about what has happened I can access works on the subject by people who have spent their lives arriving at understanding in their field. This personal view is illustrative of society in general. Collectively, people have appreciable understanding of the evolution of the objective world from the dawn of time up to today's galloping transformation. However, they do not take this understanding into account in their subjective world. They get on with living.
For most people this understanding of the objective world is of academic interest only. They work and play in their subjective world. A paleontologist studies fossils to gain awareness of the evolution of life forms, a constituent of the objective world. However, his/her life is dominated by the subjective world. Many people are used to money playing a central role in all decisions as they are able to take the influence of natural forces for granted, most of the time. They do not envisage their subjective world changing profoundly because they are blinded by the dollar sign.
Let us now turn to consider the objective world in more detail. It has evolved over billions of years. It is what has happened in the evolution of the eco systems, biological and geological, terrestrial and oceanographic. Natural cycles have played a central role in what has happened. There was no subjective world then because there were no people able to think deeply until recent millennia. The objective world is also what is happening now in these eco systems and in the systems of civilization during their limited lives. The crustal stocks of a multitude of raw materials, including the fossil fuels, are depleting speedily. Rapid climate change is having its multifaceted impact globally. The unusual acidification of the oceans is another feature of what has happened. Depletion of soil fertility vies with de-forestation and take-over of arable land in their degradation of the terrestrial eco system. The objective world is also what will happen in the future. Natural forces will slowly remedy some of the devastation of the eco systems by civilization. Many of our cities will go the way of the Mayan cities. The objective world on this planet is, and always has been, the consequence of natural forces in operation. That evolutionary process will continue whilst the Sun continues to shine on Earth. Our objective world is as simple as that. It is not dependent on the operation of the systems of civilization although they always entail using natural forces. People do no more than make wise and unwise decisions about the use of some of these forces. Other organisms do the same without having the scope to do so much harm to their life support system. They have very few tools and none like money.
Many knowledgeable people have strived over centuries to garner understanding of some of the detail of the objective world. Darwin's theory of evolution is a prominent example and there are many others. But that is only part of the objective world. We can take much of what happens for granted. Earthquakes are traumatic events but we know their impact will be temporary. Wild fires will be followed by the recovery of ecological succession. We have yet to accept, however, that some of our systems have done irreparable harm. There is no way that the nutrients our city sewerage systems flush down to the oceans can be restored to their rightful place in the soil.
Humans gaining understanding helps to determine what technology can do with natural forces. These forces, however, have never been changed by human inventions. The steam engine revolutionized the means of doing many forms of physical work but they use the heat provided by the combustion of fuel provided by nature. The natural replenishment of trees has been one of the major societal benefits of the objective world for millennia. The current spate of de-forestation just shows how ignorant society in general is. Re-forestation is something our descendants will be able to depend on as Tityas decays.
The reaction of most people to this discussion of the subjective and objective worlds will be ‘so what'. They will continue to live within their subjective world. They know there is little they can do to change what happens in a broad sense. They know that the powerful will continue to use their leverage to pursue their agenda without consideration of the consequences.
The point is that our subjective world is misleading. It conveys the impression that humans are in control of what happens. Science has provided sufficient understanding of natural forces to permit the installation of technology to use some of them. Our medical people have learned a lot about metabolism in the human body and how to treat some of the disorders that can occur. But this metabolism is very little different to that of our ancestors, Homo erectus. That medical knowledge is part of the subjective world of society but metabolism is part of the objective world.
There have been many traumatic occasions over the eons, including five mass extinctions. The climate has had its ups and downs. The Holocene epoch over the past ten thousand years was preceded by the last ice age. However, there have been many others over the past millions of years. There is appreciable controversy about what caused the demise of the dinosaurs. It is a common view that humans have caused the current rapid climate change. That is not so. Humans made the decisions that have led to the fossil fuels being released from their crustal store but natural forces did the work. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other so-called natural disasters have disrupted the operation of the eco systems many times in the past. That has been a characteristic of the objective world. It is ironic that the current climate change trauma is also a function of the objective word. That it is a consequence of human decisions does not change that fact. It is no different in principle to a beaver disrupting the flow of a stream by building a dam. The impact of the release of the fossil fuels is no different, in principle, to the impact of earthquakes and of volcanic eruptions. However, there is a vast difference in the magnitude of the impact on the eco systems. The biggest difference is that the release of the fossil fuels is a one-off event in the time-line of civilization although there has been a number of such events in the distant past..
It is easy to accept rapid improvement in the material standard of living for many in society, particularly in the developed and developing countries. That is a failing in the subjective world. It is akin to a smoker who blithely ignores the consequences of that habit. There is still widespread belief in the virtue of economic growth even as it results in increasing destruction of natural material wealth. The continuing devastation and degradation of so many aspects of the objective world goes unnoticed by them for now. Even the inevitable depletion of oil has not resulted in much action. There are many, however, for whom what has happened to their life support system is a major part of their subjective world. The billions of poor are not so blinded to what has happened but they are powerless due to lack of money.
It is fascinating to contemplate the view of the objective world that people will have centuries hence. It is quite possible that the life of our civilization, Tityas, will then be called the Anthropocene epoch, as that is a term that has already been discussed. A distinguished group of British geologists has provocatively proposed that the Holocene is over and that we have entered a new geological era—the Anthropocene—in which the systems of human society have left such a distinctive footprint on the Earth's surface through carbon pollution, nuclear fallout, urbanization and other traces of our immense technological power that it should be officially recognized by international scientific bodies as "a formal epoch". There is logic behind that proposal but it leaves out the major impact of our systems, the denuding of the crustal stores of material resources, including the fossil fuels, to produce the goods and services for us during their lives.
I presume that Homo sapiens will still be an active species despite the mass extinction that many regard as being very likely in the near future. Some realists see the demise of global industrial civilization as the sixth mass extinction. "The Sixth Great Extinction: A Status Report," by Janet Larsen on the Earth Policy Institute site mentions the previous five mass extinctions with their natural causes and then notes the evidence that human activities are having consequences that could well be leading to the sixth mass extinction. She does not point out that the impact of Tityas on the objective world is no different in principle than that the natural disasters that precipitated the previous mass extinctions.
Just as my subjective world will end, so will the subjective world of the Homo ravishers populating, Tityas. Their descendants, the Homo saviors will have a subject world much closer to the unremitting objective world, which will slowly recover from some of the rampaging by Tityas during the short, by evolutionary standards, Anthropocene epoch.
Those who question this doomsday scenario should think through their view of how the world has operated over past eons without any interference by human-determined activities. They should contemplate what will happen in the future when we are no longer able to produce temporary systems that degrade the objective world. How will New York fare without fuel and electricity to power its operations and maintenance and to provide goods and services to its populace? They will wake up from their dream and face the stark reality that natural forces still control what happens and will continue to do so even as their power declines. They will realize that the future decisions of society can only ameliorate what Tityas has done wrong. Money will lose out in the tug-o-war with the natural forces.
A natural question is what purpose is served by spelling out this reality. Doubtless, the vast majority of people will beaver away in their subjective world with scant regard for its slow demise or the stark reality that the Anthropocene epoch is ending. There will be some people, however, who learn this lesson and rise to the challenge of making the subjective world more reasonable.

Nitrogen Cycle problem. No Nitrite levels in my fish tank after 5 weeks.?
I have a 26 gallon Bow Front tank with 4 Zebra Danios & a baby Pleco in it. I have added live bacteria solution (Microbe Lift Special Blend) to the tank once a week. I have a liquid master test kit and it indicates that my ammonia levels are 8.0ppm and after 5 weeks still now signs of any Nitrite levels. I do once a week water changes of 3 gallons. Any suggestion on what I can do to solve this problem?
Test your aquarium water every other day and write down your readings. You will first see ammonia levels rising. A few weeks or so later you should see the nitrite levels rising and the ammonia levels dropping. Finally, after a few more weeks you should see the nitrate levels rising and the nitrite levels dropping. When you no longer detect ammonia or nitrites but you can detect nitrates you can assume that it is safe to add your Tropical Fish.

Garden Fountains and Statues - Add Decoration to Your Landscaping!
Garden fountains and statues are a reflection of your personality. You can decorate the lawn in million ways according to the imagination. Sculptures can also be placed on patios, decks and sunrooms. They can also be used as a base for an outdoor Side Table or can place them artistically near doors and walkways to create a welcoming feel. You can place them near the indoor plants to create a decorative look.
Lawn and garden fountains and statues are an important part of decorating your landscape. Lawn, garden and outdoor products are very popular accents that help build a serene retreat in the yard for Outdoor Living and entertaining. More and more we look to our homes as a source of relief and a place to find tranquility and peace.
When selecting a fountains and statues this completely depends on your desires and budget. You want to select fountains and statues that blend with your landscaping, such as trees, bushes, flowers etc. Statues come in many sizes and shapes, but the most popular are animals, fairies, angels, playing children and religious statues. They are made of various materials, like concrete, resin and brass. Most statues and fountains are perfect for indoor and outdoor beautification.
You can decorate your lawn or garden in unlimited ways according to your imagination. Fountains and statues can also be used to spice up the look of your deck or patio. Lawn statues and fountains can survive in many different climates, but in extreme hot or cold weather you will want to select your statues sensibly.
Lawn fountains and statues are an essential part of Garden Decoration. But, the theme of the garden should match with the space. For instance, in a formal garden, fountains and statues will look stunning, but it will be out of place in a garden with wildflowers. The most important aspect is the scale which decides where the art piece is to be placed. Artwork pieces with dark color look stunning in a light background and vice versa. If you place a marble piece with a background of green, it looks good but has a faded view of the marble when it is placed in the middle of light colored rocks. Home owners are recommended by the landscapers to invest nearly 10% of their property value in landscaping.
Lawn fountains and statues can survive different climates but if the climate is extreme choose wisely. Many sculptures are not frost proof and can't withstand the cold environment and may crack. Brass will tarnish but many people like this look. Before making a purchase make sure that the growing plants won't hide them and ensure that the statues won't shade and destroy the plants. Make sure that the color and the environment where it is going to live will match. To find your choice of garden fountains and statues visit as many home improvement and home décor stores. By having a little creativity and imagination the garden can be made to look stunning.

This article contains a plethora of information and would be difficult to take in all at once. For that reason, I have broken this article into two parts.
"Caveat Emptor" is Latin for "Let the buyer beware".
If you have Teak wood Outdoor Furniture, there is very little you will need to do be ready for spring and summer gatherings to begin. If you purchased "Teak Oiled" or "better than teak wood" outdoor furniture, you may be in for a big surprise.
There are several outlets that are selling Wood Outdoor furniture using phrases like, "Teak oiled Wood Furniture". Teak oiled means just that: the wood that the furniture is made from has been oiled with Teak oil. Period. It is not Teak wood as many of us who may have purchased it would have hoped to believe.
Part of the problem is that we are all looking for the "deal". We want to pay as little as possible for High Quality items so badly that we often overlook or don't look at all at what we are actually getting for our money.
What does "Teak like" furniture mean? Does that mean that the wood has high silica content like Teak wood? Does it mean that the wood will weather all the natural elements and last 75-100 years left outdoors, like Teak wood will? What exactly does it mean?
Look at this verbiage on any number of websites or in any number of stores and you will see it. Some of these Outdoor Wood furniture pieces that are the "GREAT DEALS" are made from a wood called Nyatoh, not Teak. It is sold as an exotic hardwood and many outlets and advertisers call it a wood which wears and behaves like teak? Go on to E-Bay and you will find sellers who are advertising it as "stronger than teak wood". In fact, that is not true.
Who are these marketers trying to kid? Guess what, they are trying to kid us all. Marketers are very good at putting spins on things to make us, the buying public, think one thing, and because we did not pay attention, it turns out to be something completely different.
Where are many of the consumers getting these great deals and purchasing their "Teak like" outdoor furniture? It is reported that many of these wood outdoor furniture sets are being purchased from big chain department stores located in each and every town across the United States, as well as local grocery and drugstores, and on the internet.
Take a look at Nyatoh versus Teak in one area of wood measurement: Durability. Nyatoh wood is generally rated as Class 3, nondurable to moderately durable, and has a low resistance to termite attack. Its sapwood is liable to powder-post beetle attack. Other woods more familiar to us with this similar durability rating are: American Cherry: African mahogany: Japanese Oak: Southern Pine: American Walnut: and Western Red Cedar, just to name a few.
Teak woods durability is classified as Class 1, Very Durable. Woods in this class include Ebony: Iroka: Makore: and Opepe to name a few. And this is just one area of measurement we are looking at, (just as a side note, class 2, which is Durable, contains familiar woods like American Oak: Balau: Sweet Chestnut: Cedar: Ekki: and Karri woods to name a few).
Nyatoh wood is protected with oil. Once treated, this wood should consistently be treated each year to maintain some protection from the elements. When it comes to Nyatoh wood, the consumer must pay particular attention to sufficiently oiling the "joints" where the protection is needed most. If water gets trapped in the joints of this wood, wood rot will begin.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with Nyatoh wood at all. It is being fashioned in very similar styles of other high quality outdoor furniture. If you are looking for the deal, make this purchase. Just be aware of what it is you are really buying. It is NOT Teak wood. You will need to maintain it differently than you would Teak wood and you may need to replace it more frequently just as you have your previous outdoor Patio Furniture.

To keep your garden pond well managed is quite a challenging job. Thus to take the right care of the Water Pond you will require the most appropriate pond supply. Garden ponds are ideal for keeping fishes, especially the Koi species. Building up and manage a fish pond at home involves lot of hard work. To ensure the long life of the pond’s inhabitants you have to keep the pond clean and well maintained. The Garden Fish pond must have adequate water supply and the water also needs to be healthy and fresh as well. For that the most essential pond supply that you must purchase is a High Quality water filter. Having a well designed pond waterfall can also help you to keep the Pond Water fresh and clean.
Most of the time the common tap water, that you use to fill your garden pond, is treated with chemicals, like chlorine which are harmful to the fish. By installing water filter on the water source you can prevent these injurious additives from diluting in the Fish Pond Water. You must find out the pond supply companies who offer water filters at the most affordable price. Many people use kosher salt for eliminating chlorine from fish pond water. But it is highly essential to follow the right procedure to do it. To clean up all the chlorine deposits from the pond surfaces you have to temporarily inactivate the pond waterfall to keep the pond dry. To clean the pond water you can also install UV filters.
Growth of harmful algae and bacteria in the fish pond water can also cause problem. While chemicals help to get rid off the algae deposits in the fish pond, the bacterial microbes work as a fantastic fish pond supply. By adding microbes or aerobic bacteria you can actually clean your fish pond very quickly and easily. Helpful bacteria also prevent the abundant growth of unwanted algae and bacteria. By adding the good bacteria in the pond and thus reducing the injurious algae growth you will also be able to keep the pond waterfall dirt free and free flowing.
For the well being of the fish in your garden pond you must also purchase another important pond supply: an aerator. Using a pond aerator especially in summer ensures the good health of your Koi Pond. By having an efficient pond aerator installed you can ensure the supply of enough oxygen in the pond water which is essential for the good health of the fish and the pond as a whole. You can use the pond aerator in the winter months as well for keeping the pond water oxygenated and warm which will help to prevent the freezing of the pond waterfall as well.

Need help with my pond?
I am building a 200 gallon pond with a waterfall, pump, filter, UV, and some shade. I really would liek to have koi but don't know how many I can get, or what they need. I would also like to have 1 or two goldfish in it. What would you do if you were in the same situation?
I really hope you mean a 2000 gallon pond, 200 gallons is almost nothing for an outdoor pond. If it is only 200 gallons, you might not want to put more than 3-4 koi in it with 4-5 goldfish.
Also, if you are in the northern part of the country where it regularly freezes the ground, it will need to be a minimum of 3 feet deep so it will allow your fish to have some room to move around when it freezes in the winter.
3'x3'x4' is around 270 gallons.

The South China Sea is the birthplace of China's civilian aluminum. Is it safe to put a solid cabin on a tiny fishing power-boat?
I'm commuting across a harbour with a 3-meter aluminum boat every day, and I am considering to build a cozy, fully enclosed structure onto it to protect me from the elements and the engine noise. Trouble is, I've constructed this in CAD, and it looks pretty top-heavy. But I don't think it is, as it's going to be all aluminum and PVC windows. I'm only worried about stability when the wind comes from the side - is this too small a boat to put a cabin onto?
Thanks.
Consider making the enclosure out of canvas to keep down on weight. Aluminum tubing or even PVC pipe might be just fine and light enough - PVC windows? Like clear vinyl - should be ok - not sure how well they clean up in regards to scratches and all.
