Visiting Venice; question on what to expect.?
I will be in Venice for a couple of days. I will be staying on the mainland and traveling each day to Venice. now I'm told it is better to avoid the tourist (which I will be) areas but I am wanting to feed the pigeons, visit the large water fountain that I saw on the the travel channel (suppose to be one of the largest fountains), and of course the gondola ride. I will be traveling on my honeymoon which pretty much forces me to go on the overpriced gondola ride, but would anyone have better suggestions on activities, places to eat, and transportation to and from the island. Thank you for your input.
Expect to get lost; be sure to have a map with you. Expect high prices; it is a tourist mecca. It also has to somehow pay for its constant repairs needed due to rising waters and sinking land.
Try to find quieter alleys for eating. They'll be a little less expensive. Or think about just stopping in a grocery store and having a picnic in one of the many beautiful squares.
Be sure to take the ferry from the mainland to Venice at least once. Approaching the city by boat is really nice. But don't do it after drinking too much wine the night before. That's not so nice. 
Be sure to see the tourist spots. That's why you're going. But also give yourself time to just wander. Your trusty map will get you back when you're ready.
