The Benefits Of Cedar In Outdoor Furniture
Adirondack chairs can be made out of just about any wood or even plastic. So why choose cedar? Firstly, cedar is a naturally beautiful wood for many reasons (which we describe below), as well as being incredibly durable and versatile, which is why it is used to construct everything from siding to decks to furniture and even roofing shingles. The natural preservative oils and characteristic smell of cedar also make it very insect and rot resistant.
Cedar is not a very dense wood, making it one of the lightest softwoods available. Cedar also boasts an incredible thermal co-efficient. That means that the little tiny "air pockets" between the cells of the wood end up acting as an insulator when the wood is dry. If it is hot outside, for example, cedar will remain at a lower temperature than most other materials that conduct heat with more efficiency (e.g. other hardwoods, metals and some plastics). The result is a cooler chair to sit on. And don't forget, because it is a lightweight wood it will be easier for you to move it around (and store it away) than a heavy hardwood chair.
Even though cedar is a lightweight wood you will not be sacrificing strength. It is a full 80% the strength of mighty OAK! That's tough!
Cedar also has amazing dimensional stability. More simply put, cedar naturally tries to equalize its moisture content to match that of the air around it, like all woods. However, unlike many other woods, cedar does not expand or contract very much when it is absorbing or evaporating moisture. This is very important because while other harder, denser woods will tend to crack or warp from season to season, cedar tends not to crack or warp. If you live in an area where humidity levels can vary wildly between seasons, cedar is a must for you.
Cedar has a very low flame-spreading ratio and is low on the "smoke developed" scale when burning as well. This means that it doesn't spread fire as fast nor produce as much smoke as some other types of wood.
Finally, cedar is very decay and weather resistant. If you leave the furniture outside you have the option of either staining it every year or two if you want to maintain its fresh new look, or allowing it to age gracefully into a beautiful silvery gray color. If you choose to leave cedar permanently outside through all of the seasons, every day, every month, every year, we highly recommend treating it to protect the furniture properly and greatly extend its natural life. After all, cedar is resistant to decay but is not impervious to it. No wood is impervious to natural aging. Staining cedar just gives it an extra durability edge against Mother Nature, especially if it is left in constant contact with the ground.

How to hold a 6x6 (or 4x4) cedar (or pressure treated) post on an already existing cement patio?
Hi - I want to roof in a 10x7 area - that will cover my BBQ - and a chair or two - the area is relatively small 10x7. I want to use either cedar or metal jack-poles (?) to support the roof structure. The patio is already there - cement. If I use the metal jack-poles I can screw them into the cement - correct? But what do I use to hold the cedar 6x6 (or 4x4) in place? I will use a post in each corner of the structure (4 posts). The roof will have a pitch to allow for the rain to drain off. I may go with all cedar or metal posts with the rest cedar.
Install Simpson ABU44 for 4x4 or ABU46 elevated post bases (it's really late and snowing like hell out there, so you'll have to give me some grace on the actual items number because my Simpson Books in the truck). Fasten them to the concrete using a 5/8" Red Head Wedge Anchor (if you have a 4" slab use a 3-1/2" anchor). And securely fasten the post to the bases using either Simpson "N-10" connector nails or SDS Screws. **The above bases have an elevated platform that keeps the bottom of the posts out of standing water.
Set your posts, plumb them with a level and brace them with 2X4's that attcach to stakes driven into the yard.
Now, if it was me, I'd use PT as I would then set a 4X6 on 4X4 posts, or 6X6 Beam on 6X6 posts and use Simpson Post Caps to secure it.
Layout your rafters on 16" centers attaching them to the house and hurricane clipping them to the beam. (I prefer to attachor sister the new rafters to the exising house ones so you'll need to pull the facia and glu and screw or nail these components together, Liquid Nails Heavy Duty construction adheasive works best for this application).
Sheet the roof with 1/2" plywood (no plywood clips are required when rafters are on 16" centers; and install a minimum of 12" wide continuous flashing under the houses shingle and tar paper to seal the joint where the two roofs come together.
Apply #30 felt and your dried in ready to shingle. Be sure that you incorporate a minimum of a 2/12 pitch for shingles. If the pitch has to be that or less I personally apply a torch down roof as rolled roofing doesn't last and if you don't know how to install it so it doesn't lift and bubble it'll look like hell.
This is a one long day job if your trades skills are good, a weekender for most. Now I don't know your homes particulars, but if you want this to be better than ordinary use Redwood for the framing. Stain the underside of the plywood (prior to installing it) and the rest of the components with Heart of Redwood Stain by "SuperDeck" if you want a rich looking covered patio.
